Nissan has unveiled the Z Kaze concept at the 2026 ZCON enthusiast convention in Phoenix, Arizona, giving its current-generation Z a distinctly nostalgic makeover.

The concept takes inspiration from Nissan’s history of open-roof Z cars while drawing heavily on the ’90s import-tuner scene. Its defining feature is a custom-engineered targa top roof, designed to bring an open-air driving experience to the current Z.

Named after the Japanese word for “wind”, Kaze was developed as a passion project by Nissan North America product planners and designers, with the team imagining the car cruising along California’s Pacific Coast Highway.

The Z Kaze is finished in Pacific Teal and receives a range of bespoke bodywork, including a vented carbon-fibre bonnet, widened fenders and a custom carbon-fibre aerodynamic body kit.

Completing the retro-inspired look are restored 18-inch NISMO LMGT2 forged wheels, sourced from an original set that has been rebuilt specifically for the concept. The wheels measure 10 inches wide at the front and 11 inches at the rear.

Inside, the concept swaps the Z’s predominantly dark interior for white leather-appointed seats, with carbon-fibre accents adding to the performance theme. Bose Personal Plus headrest speakers are fitted to the seats, allowing occupants to enjoy music with the roof removed.

The mechanical upgrades follow the same ’90s tuner theme. NISMO suspension components are combined with parts from Japanese tuning specialist GReddy, including a SUPREME SP exhaust system, front-mount air-to-air intercooler and Airinx air filter.

Nissan has not indicated that the Z Kaze is destined for production, with the concept instead serving as a showcase of the Z’s heritage and the enthusiast culture surrounding the nameplate.

The Z Kaze will remain on display at ZCON in Phoenix through September 26 before appearing at the Japanese Classic Car Show in California on October 3.
