Audi has unveiled its largest and most luxurious SUV yet, with the new Q9 taking its place at the top of the brand's line-up as a flagship designed to compete with premium full-size SUVs such as the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS and Range Rover.
Stretching 5.31 metres in length, the Q9 represents Audi's first entry into the full-size luxury SUV segment. While previous flagship SUVs such as the Q7 focused on blending practicality with premium appointments, the Q9 shifts the emphasis further towards comfort, technology and executive-style travel.
The interior is a major talking point. Seven seats are fitted as standard, while buyers can opt for a six-seat configuration featuring electrically adjustable captain's chairs in the second row. Automatic power-operated doors, massage and ventilation functions, and Audi's largest panoramic glass roof to date reinforce the Q9's luxury ambitions.
Audi has also introduced several technology firsts. The Q9 becomes the first production vehicle to feature curved digital OLED rear lights, with three-dimensional light panels designed to improve visibility while creating a distinctive lighting signature. Digital Matrix LED headlights and an expanded suite of driver assistance technologies, including hands-free highway driving in supported markets, further position the Q9 as a showcase for Audi's latest innovations.
Under the bonnet, the initial launch model is powered by a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 producing 220kW and 630Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive. Mild-hybrid assistance provides additional electric boost during acceleration while improving efficiency, though Audi is expected to broaden the powertrain range over time.
While the Q9's size and luxury credentials clearly target markets such as North America, China and the Middle East, its arrival also reflects an ongoing trend among premium manufacturers to expand into ever-larger SUVs. Buyers continue to demand the elevated seating position and versatility of SUVs without sacrificing the comfort and technology traditionally associated with flagship luxury sedans.
The Audi Q9 is scheduled to go on sale in Europe from late July, with pricing starting from €108,400. Australian timing and specifications have yet to be confirmed.
