In a rare case of fan enthusiasm shaping motorsport reality, BMW M Motorsport has transformed what began as an April Fools’ joke into a fully fledged race car. The concept of a racing version of the BMW M3 Touring was first teased playfully on social media in April 2025, but has now become a reality and is set to take on one of the most demanding circuits in the world.
The newly developed BMW M3 Touring 24H is set to make its headline appearance at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in May 2026, held at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, famously nicknamed the 'Green Hell.' Before that, the car will debut competitively in the Nürburgring Langstrecken Serie, marking its first real test under race conditions.
The origins of the project highlight the growing influence of digital engagement in modern motorsport. When BMW M Motorsport shared images of a fictional M3 Touring GT race car on April 1, 2025, the overwhelming response sparked internal momentum to bring the idea to life. By mid 2025, development was underway, and within just eight months, the concept had evolved into a track-ready machine.
Built on the same technical foundation as the BMW M4 GT3 EVO, the M3 Touring 24H combines proven GT3 engineering with the distinctive wagon body style of the M3 Touring. While slightly larger in dimensions, its performance credentials remain identical, ensuring it is more than just a novelty - it is a serious piece of racing hardware.
Beyond its engineering, the car also celebrates its fan-driven origins. Its initial livery incorporates real social media comments from the original April Fools’ post, reinforcing the connection between BMW M Motorsport and its global audience. A special design will follow for the main 24-hour race.
Fielded by Schubert Motorsport, the car will be driven by a strong lineup of BMW M works drivers, including Jens Klingmann, Ugo de Wilde, Connor De Phillippi, and Neil Verhagen. Competing in the SPX class, it will run alongside but not directly against the M4 GT3 EVO entries fighting for overall victory.
